A Women And Her Purse

Women love purses. We love carrying our STUFF around.  Stuff we probably won't need but we are prepared if we do. We have tissues, mirror, lipstick. hairbrush, pictures of our kids and money. Oh and more money when we clean our purses out. And there are those of us who carry around things we will most likely never need.

Now how many purses does one woman need! How many purses do you have that you haven't carried in quite a while and probably never will carry again?  Me?  Well, we'll skip over that. haha! We have purses for each season, however when each season rolls around do we go back to last years purse?  Probably not because there are new styles and we HAVE to have one, SO what happens to all of the last years purses?  Well, mine are hanging on a rack in the closet, packed away in boxes, piled on the bottom of the closet covered by, you got it, more purses.

But since this blog site is about blessing others, what can we do to bless someone with a purse? Someone who needs but doesn't have even a single purse. Well, we could always give them to the homeless filled with the usual "blessing bag" stuff such as bottled water, crackers, toothbrush/toothpaste, socks, deodorant, soap/washcloth etc., although this type of stuff can more easily fit into a backpack or even a 2 gallon ziploc bag.

How about women's/domestic violence shelter's?  How did these women get here and what does their future look like?  In most cases these ladies fled their homes with the clothes on their backs, many times with small children in tow. Once they are deemed safe, which sometimes takes a while,  most will need to pursue employment to once again regain independence and continue raising their families.

Gaining employment can be a daunting task for anyone, but imagine trying to do so without proper clothes and accessories.  Again, women want and need their purses. They need to appear as normal as possible.  No one wants to go in to an interview with "homeless" written on their faces. We want to dress for success and many times a purse will make a woman feel as if she is accomplishing this.

So, instead of letting those unused purses pile up, let's prepare them for someone who could truly benefit from them.  Let's convert these old purses into a functional accessory to be used.  Look in your own purse and see what is in there that you use regularly. I keep some sort of wallet to hold my various forms of identification and any cash I may have.  I also have tissues or wipes in case of allergies or even small spills. Reading glasses if needed.  A notepad and pen is always good to have to jot down addresses, phone numbers, appointment dates/times etc. A brush, mirror, lip color, hand lotion, nail clippers/file and breath mints to freshen up before an interview.

These are things most of us simply take for granted, but for a woman who has nothing they can mean a lot to their self esteem.

If you have unused purses, and most of us do, please give some thought to adding some of these items mentioned above to those purses and drop them off at a women's shelter.  I can promise you they will be a blessing to those who receive.

Now, consider taking time to clean out your closet and BE PREPARED TO BLESS!

Crocheting with PLARN.......what????

PLARN.  What is it and how can we bless others with it?

Plarn is simply plastic yarn.  How is it made?  By folding plastic bags from your local grocer or big box store, cutting into strips, and looping together the pieces.  It is very simple and FREE!

Now, how can we bless others with it?

By crocheting mats for those living out in the weather this cold and rainy season! Actually they are good for any season.  The plastic helps hold in body heat, keeps the cold and rain much more at bay than a simple cloth blanket and also drys much quicker.

Basic crocheting skills are all that is needed since the mat is a simple rectangle using double crochet stitch.  The mats should be approximately 3 feet wide by 6 feet long.  This takes approximately 700 bags.  Now I realize this seems like a lot of bags but believe me they add up quickly. Plus, you can ask family and friends to save them for you and end up with lots and lots!

By using a bigger needle, say a "J", this makes for a fluffier mat.

Making the "plarn" is easy.  Simply start by flattening a bag out
Then fold once
And fold again
Cut the end off of the bottom of the bag
Then cut the handle off
Cut bag in half
Then in quarters
Open up the pieces and lay one end of a "strand" over another
Loop the top pieces under the bottom, and pull, holding the left bag with your hand
Pull gently until tight
Continue to do this, adding more plarn to the end.

For those who are not crocheter's, this could be their job, to make the plarn. .Maybe make an assembly line. A folder, a cutter and a looper.

Their are many videos on youtube if you need more instruction too!

What a great project this could be for any group!

So simple to.........

BE PREPARED TO BLESS!

Spring Has Sprung.....Part 1

Spring is my favorite season of the year here in Texas. To me it brings so many of the things that I love.  Beautiful weather.  Not so beautiful weather (I love thunderstorms), the commemoration of our risen Savior, outdoor festivals, patio meals, weekend road trips, and I could go on and on.  Like I mentioned earlier, it is my FAVORITE time of year.

Spring, like most seasons brings the good, the bad and the ugly. The ugly being the severe weather. We are known for large hail and our share of tornadoes.

So what is the bad? Cleaning!! You know, the Spring Cleaning, where you clean out closets, cabinets, garage, attic etc.

For this post I am going to focus on the dreaded closets. Changing out the clothing to coincide with the new temperatures.  That means out with the heavy coats and jackets.  Bag them all up and away we go to the local thrift store, Goodwill or whoever will take these items off of our hands.

Now, let me fast forward to November.  The weather is getting cold and several local charities, churches, schools, civic organizations, you name it, they're having a COAT DRIVE for the homeless. We begin calling up all of our friends and neighbors, posting messages on our social media of choice, advertising in the church bulletin.  We do a number of things to gather up coats, only to be met with the same answers from so many people that we are giving ourselves, "Oh, I wish I had known earlier in the year when I was cleaning out our closets.  I got rid of a whole bunch of coats and jackets that you could have had."

Now, here comes the part about "being prepared to bless". Right about now, when you are packing up all of the coats and jackets to get rid of, find a place to stash them, THEN when coat drive time comes you have a lot to share.  I know, we just want to get rid of this stuff now!! I'm the same way, but there's always room in the back of the closet, top of the closet, under the bed, in the garage, an outside storage unit or somewhere that you can store that extra bag away for a few more months.

Wouldn't you feel better if you were prepared when the time rolls around instead of having to give excuses as to why you can't contribute again this year?  I know I would.

So let's get creative.  Find a place to stash and be ready.

Blessings,
Johnna
